Announcements

Prom!

 

Prom is Saturday, May 5th at Eve’s Waterfront (same venue as last year). Tickets will be on sale at lunch in Ms. Zaugg’s office or Ms. Charity’s room.  Guest request forms are also available and must be returned before you buy a guest ticket.

Juniors and Seniors who wish to run for Prom Court, you can sign up outside Ms. Zaugg’s office (319),  See the sign up sheet for Court titles and details.

 

 


 

 

Creative Retakes

Yearbook Photos

 

Don’t want to use your school id photo for the yearbook? Well, now you don’t have to!

If you’d like to change up your yearbook photo, you’re invited to Digital Media’s studio photography session – ‘Creative Retakes.’
You can dress however you like and we’ll also provide a variety of props. We will take photos in our wonderful studio photography set up.
All you need to do is come to Digital Media during 8th or 9th period during the week of March 25-March 28.

OSA Parents of Students with Disabilities (APT-PODS) works to help the administration and faculty create and sustain an educational community where students with disabilities are fully supported, and enjoy full inclusion, representation, respect, dignity at OSA.

TESTING UPDATES

AP Exams for enrolled High School Students

 

Tests for high school students currently enrolled in one of our six AP classes are approaching, and will be administered from May 7 – May 16. The schedule appears below. All AP students must submit a test order form and deposit of $20 toward the testing fee by Friday March 16th. Details and deposit forms have been distributed in AP classes; extras are available in the front office. The total fee, per test, is $94. Payment in full is also accepted.

If anyone is able to sponsor a student who may face economic hardship in paying for this test, please simply write your check – payable to OSA – for any additional amount as you are able. Any excess amount will be donated to the Student Leadership Fund, and is not tax-deductible. Additionally, those for whom the fee is an obstacle to taking the AP test(s) should please contact Ms. Douglass byMarch 16th in Room 227a or at 873-8815.

Tests will be given at school; rooms will be announced closer to the test dates.

Social Media

 

Social media isn’t simply a way of life for kids — it’s life itself. To help them keep their online interactions safe, productive, and positive, we will talk about the most up-to-date research and guidance on social media basics. Once kids go online, their chances of finding cyberbullies, haters, and trolls is, sadly, quite high. This conversation will address age-specific guidelines, videos, and other advice to help with tough conversations about the modern age of communication. To help kids maximize the Internet’s benefits — while minimizing the risks — we offer the latest research, tips, and tools on what really keeps kids safe online.

Bay Area Clinical Associates, P.C., (BACA) is a physician-owned and operated organization offering evidence-based mental health services to youth and their families in the San Francisco Bay Area. They believe that all youth, regardless of socio-economic status, should have access to gold-standard mental health interventions. They believe that every individual’s mental health is an essential component of the overall well-being of our community.

The OSA Education Support Team endeavors to build capacity in our students, their families, and the Oakland community.  We hope to be able to contribute insightful recommendations that will improve, strengthen and help expand support for students with special needs. We provide resources, referrals, information and networking.  We desire to foster strong, solid working foundations between parents and the school, so that everyone who is invested in the education of a student is able to function as a team to obtain the best possible education for our students.

Running April 10 through May 13, SJDC’s Spring Intensive 2018 offers 2 Dance Training tracks:

We are very excited to announce that on Monday March 19th we starting to upgrade our lighting systems to both save energy and improve the lighting quality in our classrooms, studios, and offices.  We have secured funding under California Proposition 39 Clean Energy Jobs Act (Prop-39) that provides grant funding for a comprehensive LED Lighting Retrofit throughout our Main facility and the remaining areas of the Sweets Ballroom.

The new LED Lighting systems are designed to both improve our lighting quality and controllability.  Lighting color rendition will be very close to natural daylight.

These improvements to our lighting systems will also reduce our energy bills by approximately $20,000 annually, about half of what it now costs us to light the facilities. Work will be after classes and possibly on weekends.  It is anticipated that the project will take 8 – 10 weeks to complete.

Three OSA students will be performing for the United Nations’ International Women’s Day Forum on Wednesday, March 28! The Big Open Space (TBOS) TheaterDance Crew including OSA students Sammi Kane, Olivia Braun, and Roan Pearl will open the evening’s event with a beautiful set of dances choreographed and directed by Lee Kane.

United Nations Association (UNA) 2018 International Women’s Day Forum “Human Rights for Women & Girls: Promise Fulfilled or Just Dreams?”

The 2018 Women’s Day celebration will include a full dinner, music and dance performances, a keynote speaker and panel discussion. Topics will include women’s accomplishments, as well as barriers to the foundational questions of rights, equality, non-discrimination, respect, dignity, and advancing CEDAW (UN Convention on the Elimination of all forms of Discrimination Against Women).

Performances will complement the understanding of this UN theoretical vision while narratives by the panelists will exemplify various stages of progress of women in the arts, struggles in the political, and scientific fields with practical ramifications of these tenets in people’s day-to-day lives.
