Next year marks a tremendous opportunity to shape and influence the board of the Alliance of Parents & Teachers at OSA (APT). There are many open board positions, and we are looking for energetic and interested parents to help support and lead the way.  Here are the available positions:

Weekly Announcements

AP&E: Friday, May 24, the Audio Production & Engineering department will be having an album release party at 25th Street Studios in Oakland. The event runs from 6-9pm and general admission is $10 ($5 for students). Attendees will receive a free album download with the price of admission. There will also be merch for sale as well as free food and drinks. Come show support and hear what the students in this department have been working on!

APUSH: Any students interested in taking AP US History next year should pick up the summer reading assignment from Ms. Kuzmeski’s in room 322.

8th Grade Dinner Dance: The 8th-grade dinner dance will be held on Friday, May 24, from 6:30-9:00 at Sweets Ballroom. The theme is Hollywood/Movie Star. Tickets are $25 and include dinner, drinks, and the photobooth. Tickets are available in Room 248 at lunch. Students interested in helping out should come to Room 248 at lunch on Thursdays.

OSA Student Council: The time has come for OSA Student Council re-elections. May 29, elections will be held with the High School and rising 9th-grade candidates giving speeches and a vote. MS Elections will be held next fall. Positions available are Student Body President (Senior Only), HS Vice-President (Upperclass-students Only), Secretary, Treasurer and Grade Representative (9th to 12th). Students must sign up outside of Mr. Oz’s office and send a copy of their speech to him no later than Wednesday, May 22. All information can be found outside his office. Please note MS & HS Student Council will be joined as one force next year as one council.

Savage Jazz Dance Company’s Summer Intensive 2019

Registration Now Open!

Running June 17-28 and July 8-26, Monday through Friday, (10am-1pm: Beginner/Intermediate; 1:30-5pm: Intermediate/Advanced at Oakland School for the Arts School of Dance 3rd Floor Dance Studios), Savage Jazz Dance Company’s Summer Intensive is a 5 week training program for students 10 and up, headed by SJDC Artistic Director and Oakland School for the Arts School of Dance Department Co-Chairs, Mr. Reginald Ray-Savage and Ms. Alison Hurley.

With classes in Ballet, Contemporary, Body Conditioning, Repertory, and more, the program emphasizes a passionate and committed approach to training, and students will be expected to embrace this approach as they are challenged to hone their technique, improve their strength, and increase their flexibility and stamina.

An outstanding training ground for contemporary dancers, students of SJDC, Mr. Savage, and OSA have gone on and been accepted to University of North Carolina School of the Arts, Ailey/Fordham BFA Program, London Contemporary Dance School, The School of American Ballet, American Ballet Theatre Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School, The Juilliard School Summer Intensive, Hubbard Street II, Ailey II, Martha Graham Dance Company, Philadanco! The Philadelphia Dance Company, Ronald K. Brown/EVIDENCE, A Dance Company, Oakland Ballet Company, Garth Fagan Dance, Mark Morris Dance Group’s The Hard Nut, Disney’s The Lion King – Musical, and more.

Anyone serious about their dance training will benefit from this program.Those intending to pursue or currently in training to become professional dancers, particularly those interested in performing with Savage Jazz Dance Company, will have a chance to experience how the company trains and to learn SJDC repertory.

Those wanting to attend OSA’s School of Dance will get to experience and gain a deeper understanding of what it is like to train as a young dance student at OSA.

RISE: NEXT GEN VOICES

SUMMER A CAPPELLA INTENSIVE

WEEK 1: June 19 – 25 (no session on Sat/Sun), 12 – 4 pm
WEEK 2: July 8 – 12, 12 – 4 pm
LOCATION: Oakland School for the Arts, 530 18th Street
TUITION: $325 for one week or $600 for both (scholarships available!)
INSTRUCTOR: Lisa Forkish (B.M. Berklee College of Music, renowned a cappella arranger and director of Vocal Rush)

In this RISE intensive, singers will learn challenging contemporary a cappella repertoire with a social conscience, cultivate creative expression through improvised harmony singing, develop leadership skills, and foster connection and community with other teens. Open to youth ages 13 – 18. Rise up and sing for change!
